Common Questions
Who is Ascent for?
Anyone taking or retaking Algebra 1, roughly ages 13 and up. Fifty-six skills across twelve legs cover a full US Algebra 1 course, from foundations to quadratics and radicals. Reaching the summit means finishing the course. For ages 8 to 11 we make Numina, our arithmetic game.
I already know some algebra. Do I have to start at the bottom?
No. When a climber starts their expedition, Ascent offers the flight in: a short, optional placement check that can start you as high as Camp Two, with everything below credited in full. If you are new to algebra, skip it and begin the classic route at Lukla. The check adapts as you answer and ends kindly at the first miss, so it never becomes a test you can fail.
What does Ascent cost?
Ascent is free through Camp One: foundations, the language of algebra, and all of linear equations. A single one-time purchase, the Full Expedition, unlocks the rest of the mountain. There is no subscription, no ads, and nothing else to buy.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
The Full Expedition is tied to your Apple ID. On a new device, open the unlock screen and tap Restore Purchases, and make sure you are signed in with the same Apple ID that bought it. The unlock also works for every climber profile on the device.
Does the purchase work with Family Sharing and Ask to Buy?
Yes. The Full Expedition supports Family Sharing, so one purchase can cover your family group. Ask to Buy is supported too: a teen can request the unlock, and it activates automatically once a parent approves.
I'm stuck on a problem. What do I do?
Call Base Camp. The radio button is on every problem and is never punished: it gives four levels of help, from a small nudge to the full worked idea. Every concept also has a lesson you can reread and fresh worked examples, and the scratchpad gives you space for rough work with your finger or Apple Pencil.
Why am I being asked to review old skills?
That is the acclimatization system doing its job. Ascent schedules spaced reviews of earlier skills and mixes them into sessions, because coming back to something right before you would forget it is what makes it stick. Altitude in Ascent means a skill is truly owned, not just seen once.
What is the Weather Window?
A short daily challenge, separate from the main climb, with its own streak. It is the same for every climber on a given day, so you can compare cards. Missing a day never takes away altitude or patches.
Can more than one person use Ascent?
Yes. Ascent supports multiple climbers on one device, each with their own expedition: separate progress, altitude, streaks, and patches. Switch climbers from the profile button on the mountain screen. Profiles are not accounts and need no sign-up, and one Full Expedition unlock covers all of them.
Does Ascent work offline?
Yes. The whole app works offline. An internet connection is only used for optional iCloud sync between your own devices and for the App Store purchase itself.
Does it sync between iPhone and iPad?
Yes. If you enable iCloud for Ascent, progress syncs across your own iPhone and iPad through your private iCloud account, which we cannot access. You can turn this off in your device settings if you prefer to keep each device separate.
Where is my summit certificate?
After you summit, the certificate is yours to revisit any time from Settings, and you can share it with the standard iOS share sheet. Your expedition patches live in the patch gallery, also in Settings.
The app crashed or is not responding
Make sure you are running the latest version of Ascent and iOS or iPadOS. Try force-closing the app and reopening it, and if needed restart the device. If the problem continues, contact us with a short description of what you were doing when it happened.
